Passive solar energy capture includes methods where no special equipment is used to collect sunlight. In buildings the primary function of passive solar solutions is to provide pre-heating energy in times of low power periods. Since winter is characterised in the temperate climate by low overall solar energy input, passive solutions bear greater significance during the transient periods.

The easiest way to capture sunlight energy directly is to place optimally sized thermally insulating glass windows on the southern facade of the house, the layout of the building is designed with as little bearing storeys as possible and living spaces are arranged primarily to the southern side. Unheated glazed anterooms at the southern entrance of the house (such as a glazed terrace, porch, windshield or greenhouse) contribute to the heating of the house considerably. The mass wall separates the living space from outdoors and absorbing the energy of sunlight as a heat reservoir, it will transmit heat to the heated spaces

The energy of sunlight is exploited actively when engineering solutions and equipment is used to capture and transfer solar power which are called active solar devices. The most important component of these systems is the solar power collecting device (absorbing structure), the so-called solar collector or thermal collector. Thermal collectors absorb sunlight and the power generated this way is transferred to a suitable operating medium. One type is the so-called fluid type flat collector, where non toxic fluid (propylene glycol) is warmed up by the captured solar energy

This liquid flows between the collector and the heat exchanger, where heat is transferred to water. The collecting structure – absorber, in other words – is a surface made of copper plates. Heat is transported with the use of a copper pipeline system. Highest efficiency of heat use is ensured by the selective heat absorbing coat of the copper. Heat loss is prevented by excellent thermal insulation and the solar glass panel covering the structure

A solar cell is a device which transforms solar radiation to electric power with the help of the photoelectrical effect. The price of solar panels intended for household use declines continuously, in parallel with its increased efficiency rate – sooner or later the time will come when solar cells will provide cheaper electricity than conventional power plants do.
